Road To Kinoe â Finding Proof For General Ona
Day 338 of the Lizardâs Year
âWhoa, Biz, calm down!â I pulled down on my steedâs chunky leather reins, slowing his energy. The big lizard prepared to surge down yet another dusty dune. The stable hand hadnât lied when it came to the Bigzardâs capabilities, especially its seemingly endless stamina and the steady gait it held for hours on end.
Unfortunately, he had missed out one issue in particular.
Comfort.
Horses werenât all that nice to ride for extended periods at a time, but a good saddle combined with some skill on the rider's part could mitigate most of the issues. Even after Iâd been with Biz for over a month, I still hadnât quite got the trick down, if one existed at all.
Fortunately, I had my basic healing spell, which somewhat countered the pain, but even with the saddlebag full of plundered mana gems, it just felt wrong to waste such a precious resource to solve such a minor problem.
I reflected on the past month while perched on the hilltop. After we acquired mounts, Krissy sped off toward the eastern volcano. I didnât need to soul search of angst over the decision. A ship away from this region sounded lovely and a quick peek into the northern volcano would be fine, especially since I could avoid contracts with this haul.
Avril dominated my mind and I hoped she created the distraction, escaped, and headed toward the eastern volcano. For all I knew, she rotted within General Onaâs cells beneath Vomos castle. If he did capture her, I doubted heâd kill her, given how much she had given for Sekretto in the past. I held onto positive thoughts and if I discovered something, Iâd definitely help the cause against Okato and the cultists.
I grumbled at my next challenge, getting through a city while being wanted. Oh, and my laden lizard carried a small fortune everyone would want to steal.
Wedged between two natural barriers, rested Kinoe. More a town than a city, but its size wasnât the main concern. The settlement lay between two towering mountains, lodged into the only passable valley in the area. Circling around was possible, sure, but it would add at least a month and a half to my journey.
No. I needed to head straight through. My supplies were running low anyway, and Biz needed to take a long, well-earned rest in one of the Bigzardâs specifically designed soaking tubs.
The issue lay with the ones watching over Kinoe. They were linked to the Warbound, similar to everyone who made Sekretto their home, but I didnât know if they had any direct means of communication with Vomos, or General Ona in particular. While I sped north at such a pace itâd be nearly impossible for a normal messenger to pass me on the road, there were more magical means of passing information to and from.
It was a risk, but Iâd gone over the chances for the past few days, and my mind was made up.
